THE WHAT: ART, BITCHES
Posted by Amelia
Are you in Sydney? Do you love awesome stuff? Then it’s probably time for you to check out the Pop to Popism exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. This exhibition is massive, with an excellent audio guide if you love the period, and covers the movement within Australia and internationally.
THE WHO: MY HEROES
Andy Warhol is the star of the show, with his consumer and pop culture themed works being as relevant today as when they were made. Warhol particularly picked up on the cult of celebrity and our fascination with tragedy and death, something the spread of the internet has only intensified. His subject matter of advertising, pop culture and film star exemplifies the rebellious nature of Pop Art as it fought traditional ideas of “fine art”.
Two of Warhol and Basquit’s collaborations are near the end of the exhibition, which are great, and i wish they had more of Basquiat’s graffiti style work.
Roy Lichtenstein, another superstar of the genre, is well represented. His works are impressive in scale and fantastically graphic. There’s a great example of his early work that shows him experimenting with technique and thematic focus.
Other work’s to look out for are Martin Sharp’s music and pop culture pieces and a huge Brett Whiteley in a room to itself, which is worth taking your time over.
On until the 1st of March. Go and get some culture in you. POP TO POPISM
